School District and Police Department Agree to Funding of School Resource Officers

The School Resource Officer Advisory Committee is a long-standing body that is comprised of City Council and School Board Members as well as City, Police and District staff.  There has been a collaborative, ongoing discussion between these two governmental agencies over the past two years regarding the funding model for School Resource Officers.  Currently, there are five School Resource Officers who are housed at Fond du Lac High School (two officers) and Sabish, Woodworth and Theisen Middle Schools (one officer each).  All officers have responsibilities at the District elementary schools as well.

At a March 18, 2019 meeting, the School Resource Officer Advisory Committee agreed to continue the existing model of funding: a 50/50 sharing of the costs associated with the employment of five School Resource Officers for twelve months.  Those costs are paid equally by the City of Fond du Lac and the Fond du Lac School District.

The School Resource Officer Advisory Committee also agreed to the assemblance of a sub-committee that will identify summer opportunities whereby the School Resource Officers can further assist the District and the City as it pertains to engaging and connecting with the youth of the community.  This sub-committee will bring their recommendations to the full School Resource Officer Advisory Committee at the June 2019 meeting of the group, with agreed upon activities to begin in the summer of 2019.

The partnership between the City of Fond du Lac, the Police Department and the Fond du Lac School District is strong.  Safety in our schools and within the community is a paramount issue, and we will continue to work together in a collaborative fashion to ensure it.
