Fond du Lac School District Board Member Elizabeth Hayes Not Seeking Re-Election

After 33 years of service to the Fond du Lac School District Board of Education, Elizabeth Hayes has arrived at the decision to not pursue another term as a Board member when her present term expires in April 2019.

Since being elected to the Board of Education in April 1986, Mrs. Hayes has served as the Board President for 11 years, Vice President for 6 years, and Secretary/Clerk for 13 years. She was also actively involved in various roles for the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) including Region 7 Director, a member of the Policy and Resolutions Committee, a delegate at the WASB Annual Education Convention, and attended several National School Board Conventions.

Due to her extensive experience as a Board member and in the field of education, she was nominated by the WASB as a potential appointee to the Professional Standards Council (PSC). That nomination resulted in her appointment to the Council by State Superintendent Tony Evers in April 2017. Other awards include achieving the Level 5 WASB award, being named the Wisconsin AAUW Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year, and, in 2016, being recognized for her dedication with the 30-Year WASB Award.

Mrs. Hayes has consistently demonstrated her commitment to public education. She has been an advocate for children and families in her professional and personal roles within the community.  As a UW-FDL Professor from 1968 - 2011 she conducted many science programs for elementary school classrooms and middle school students, organized and received grants for science workshops, and helped launch the College for Kids program in collaboration with retired UW-FDL professors. She served as Department Chair for the 13 campuses Biology Department of the University of Wisconsin Colleges for 9 years and was promoted to Emerita status upon her retirement.

In electing not to run, Mrs. Hayes hopes that other community members will be encouraged to serve the students of Fond du Lac in this capacity. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the enriching experiences that serving on the Board has afforded me. From understanding the unique challenges of a school district’s operations to being immersed in the process of referendum planning to working closely with others who are/were devoted to the betterment of our education system, I’ve valued every minute of this Board position,” shared Hayes. “I appreciate the trust that the Fond du Lac community placed in me as your representative on the Board. Your support both when I was running as a candidate and when I was serving on the Board, have meant the world to me.”

If you are considering running for the Board of Education in the April election, candidacy papers can be obtained from the Fond du Lac School District Human Resources department located within the Administration Center at 72 W. 9th Street.
